The Letter Writer: Paul’s Background and Torah Perspective by Tim Hegg
Who was Paul, the great leader of the Christian faith? Did he ‘convert’ from Judaism to Christianity, or is that a more modern understanding? Did Paul really teach things that were in opposition to the writings of Moses? If so, wouldn’t that make him a false teacher by Biblical standards?
There are so many questions surrounding the man known as Paul, the author of so much of the New Testament (or Apostolic Writings). Is what we know about Paul shaped by our tradition or by his own words? How we interpret his writings are often based more on what we’ve been taught than a careful study of his writings themselves.
This was a wonderful read, in my opinion. I appreciated how the author spent careful time comparing the words of Paul in one letter with his words in another and using Paul’s own description of what he believed as a foundation for interpreting his messages. This was a very encouraging and refreshing book to read. A great insight into the man Paul, using his own words and his own culture to explain some of the things that, even Peter said, can be difficult to understand.
